One of the toughest, most gruelling competitions in the world is Le Mans, an epic 24-hour race.
Held annually since 1923, this legendary event is one of the biggest races every year, and we’re proud to have Le Mans featured in Real Racing™ 3.
We sat down with Senior Producer, Luis Gigliotti to learn more about Le Mans.
What is Le Mans?
Le Mans is the world’s oldest, active and most revered sports car endurance race. It has been raced since 1923 near the town of Le Mans in France.
Dubbed the “Grand Prix of endurance and efficiency”, Le Mans is one of the most prestigious auto races in the world. What makes it unique is the balance that needs to be struck between speed and endurance.
A team of drivers race for 24 hours without sustaining mechanical damage while managing the cars’ consumables. Drivers sometimes race for over 2 hours straight before swapping to a new driver so the physical and mental toll on them is tremendous.
Why is Le Mans so important to race fans?
This is subjective of course, but I can speak for myself and perhaps a few fans out there.
There are stories of three generations in a family all going to Le Mans on a sort of “spiritual” journey to connect as a family. For fans of auto racing, you can’t help but be impressed by the feat these drivers and their race teams accomplish.
The physical and psychological toll involved in a 24 hour race is mind boggling.
What sets Le Mans apart from other race tracks around the world?
The Circuit des 24 Heures, also known as (Circuit de la Sarthe) is most famous as the venue for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
It’s one of the longest circuits in the world at over 8 miles (13 kilometers) long, and at capacity can hold over 100,000 people.
But really, if you ask fans, the track cannot be separated from the event itself.
The race has been held there since 1923 for over 90 years. The history of the track, combined with the event itself and the race teams, drivers and fans who have been a part of it make the track something special.
Where does Le Mans fit in in racing’s history?
It has to be up there with the greatest race events in history. Partially, because of what it represents as one of the greatest racing challenge between man and machine.
Le Mans is mentioned in the same breath as the Monaco Grand Prix or Indie 500. The mere fact that it has been running since 1923 alone is impressive, but more importantly this race has seen almost every famous marque participate.
Bitter personal rivalries and professional competition exist like no other race in this world at Le Mans.
Back in 1960, Henry Ford II was frustrated at his unsuccessful attempt to buy Ferrari. He vowed to defeat Ferrari on the race track and made huge investments to develop superior race cars. Ford won the race in 1967.
The head of Ford racing didn't drink, so when he was handed the magnum of Champagne to celebrate his victory, he famously popped the cork and sprayed it everywhere! That’s where the celebration of spraying champagne began. Now it's synonymous with winning in every sport around the world.
What can fans expect to find in the Le Mans update of RR3?
The track, cars and event have been painstakingly recreated to be as realistic as possible.
For the first time ever in Real Racing, we are giving players the choice to pick which manufacturers LMP1 car they want to race.
Players can pick between the Porsche, Audi and new-comers Nissan. Players can win all three cars featured in the update!
How does RR3 make Le Mans real?
