For this week's AHL Simulation of the Week, we are in Abbotsford, British Columbia where the North Division leading Heat welcome the Charlotte Checkers into town. Both teams look poised to make the playoffs but need to continue winning to ensure home-ice advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs. The Charlotte Checkers versus Abbotsford Heat is tonight; game time is 7PM PST.
Two great teams equal one incredibly tight contest. There would be absolutely no scoring until the hometown Heat broke the deadlock half-way through the third period, thanks to a Brett Carson goal. It seemed as though the home-side would hold onto the victory, that is until Nicolas Blanchard managed to tie the game with less than four minutes left in regulation.
With no winner after three periods and five minutes of overtime, it would be a shootout that determined the winner. Checkers’ Marc-Andre Gragnani would be the hero for the visitors, giving Charlotte the victory and frustrating the home-town crowd .
It should come as no surprise that in a low-scoring contest, the goaltenders would get most of the praise. Justin Peters of the Checkers would take First Star Honors behind his 38 save performance. Abbotsford’s Barry Brust earned the game’s Second Star, stopping 23 of 24 shots. Heat’s Goal-scorer, Brett Carson would round out the Three Stars.
